Velipoja is located in the Shkodra Region, near the borders with Montenegro. The name of Velipoja comes from the Old Slavonic (Velikopoje – Great Plain). . The area has about 8 km of coastline and includes the Josef Franc Francis, which constantly changes shape. The border line follows the Lower Buna.
